Emser Tile Employee Newsletter - 2021 Q3

ASSOCIATE SPOTLIGHT:
Mark Scriven
Operations Manager, Wichita, Kansas

Mark Scriven is currently one of the best Operations Managers in Emser’s largest region. Mark’s success led Emser to ask him to help train all new operations managers for Region 3. He not only manages his own operation, but also a virtual market in Lubbock, Texas, which is very similar in sales volume to his own branch.

EMSER: Tell us a bit about yourself.

MARK SCRIVEN: I've been with Emser now for two and a half years. Before that, I've always been in management. I'm originally from Peoria, Illinois. I met my wife at a meeting for the company we both worked for there and fell in love. We moved down to Wichita in 2011.

EMSER: What do you like the most about working for Emser?

MS: It's very fast paced, which is great. The days soar by very quickly. The customers are awesome, and the hours are outstanding as well. That was something that I never had before, Monday through Friday hours. That opens up a lot of time for my family.

EMSER: What work accomplishments are you most proud of?

MS: I would say our increase in sales. When I started two and a half years ago, and we were doing just barely over $100,000 annually. And now we're topping $250,000 every single month – and just hit $300,000, which was the best the store has ever done.

EMSER: What advice would you give others in the team there?

MS: Just keep working hard. If you put the time in, and you do it right, things will pay off. A lot of people like to take shortcuts at different things in life. That winds up costing you. It may take a little bit more time, but once you get a good process in place, things just flow day to day.

EMSER: Why do you like Wichita so much?

MS: It reminds me of Peoria, which was just 200,000 people. It had big city amenities, but a small city feel. Wichita's kind of like that too. We've got half a million people, but you wouldn't know it. It's very friendly, down to earth. And there's a lot to do here too.

EMSER: So what do you like to do in your spare time? Hobbies, anything like that?

MS: I actually coach my older daughter’s softball team. I just officially took it over this year. Other than that, honestly, it's running the girls places. I love watching my daughters play basketball and watching my younger one play soccer.

EMSER: What would you consider a great meal?

MS: I'm very simple. I will take a premium hamburger over a fancy steak any day of the week – a premium hamburger and an ice-cold beer.

EMSER: Books, movies, shows -- what do you like?

MS: We're big Marvel fans. For Christmas my wife bought me the Thanos gauntlet. She also got me tickets to go see KISS -- I'd always wanted to see KISS.

EMSER: Did they live up to what you expected?

MS: They were amazing. Those guys are 70 years old, and you would not have known it. I couldn't believe how good that show was. It was absolutely outstanding.
